Our sympathies

Last Sunday four IBOs were killed in a weather-related car accident while returning home from a business meeting.  It was a horrible tragedy that took the lives of four young people -- including two Marines Corps Reserves officers who had proudly served their country.

Kyle Sporleder, 20, of Sylvania, Ohio; Aaron F. Esposito, 23, of Novi, Mich.; Lauren Diefenthaler, 19, of Ypsilanti, Mich.; and Rodney M. Echelbarger, age unknown, of Holland, Ohio were killed on icy Indiana roads returning home Sunday evening. Kyle and Rodney were lance corporals in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.

Amway Global sends its thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims and has reached out to those who knew them to see if we can be of any help or support during this very difficult time.

But what's made this even more trying for those touched by this tragedy is the reaction of some who are critical of our business.   These critics have taken advantage of online coverage of this tragedy to post attacks on our business.

Here in the Opportunity Zone we've respected the rights of those who are critical of our business to hold opinions that differ from our own.  We've welcomed their voices and allowed them to share their opinions, within reason and within our comments policies.

But we are shocked and appalled that some have used this tragedy as a forum for their criticisms.  To me, this is like showing up at the wake for a shooting victim to deliver a blistering attack on gun reform.  It's inappropriate and inconsiderate of those grieving for loved ones taken from them all too soon.

Regardless of your opinions about aspects of our business, please respect those who have lost sons and  a daughter, a sister and brothers, friends and colleagues.  The families and friends of the victims  are suffering a sudden and significant loss and they should not be subjected to this kind of abuse.  We are sorry some have chosen to intrude on your grieving with their attacks.

There's a time and place for discussion and debate about this business.  This is not the time for anything but supporting the grieving families and friends of Kyle, Aaron, Lauren, and Rodney.  Our thoughts are with them.

One of your own IBOs (Tex) was on that site using it as a platform to rant against the "tool scam"...

Interesting you post against the critics of your business but then choose to overlook the people from your business who are critics of the BSM companies.

Editor's Note:  The post was hardly "overlooking" anyone.  The post took everyone to task -- critic and IBO alike -- who chose to use this tragedy as a forum for their personal views.

As someone who served with such men, let me know when you'll be ready to discuss how to drastically reduce the chances of this happening again, as I find it amazing similar tragedies haven't happened much more frequently.

We can do NOTHING about these 4, except to grieve with their families.

We can, however, take positive action to minimize similar future occurrences.

Editor's Note:  As soon as you can find a way to eliminate icy winter roads in the Midwest you'll have the residents of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin and Minnesota beating a path to your door!

Beth,

Thanks for the post, I had heard about some of the comments being made and am amazed at the lack of consideration for the families involved.

Obviously, anyone can criticize this business all they want, but at least show you can respect the feelings of others and do it at the right time and place.

I am a retired US Army NCO and an active IBO. Icy road conditions apparently were the leading factor in the tragic deaths of these four young people. I send my sincerest sympathies to their respective families. Now, to Tex, have you ever served on a military exercise where someone died in an accident? I have. Yet I do not blame the military or the government or anyone else. The accidents in themselves are tragic enough. Let's let these families grieve in the dignity and peace they deserve.

I'm sure that Amway would never take advantage of a situation similar to this to further their own agenda.

This is a shame in so many different ways.

I have not posted further comments on this subject, to the dismay of some, because they appear to be perpetuating the issue.

My name is Mary Schmidt and I am the mother of LCpl. Rodney Echelbarger. Rodney poured his heart and soul into Amway, and he died doing what he loved. I want to thank all those many IBOs from Amway for all of their thoughts and prayers. I never fathomed getting this much support from so many people I have never met. Thank you!

Editor's Note:  Mrs. Schmidt, thank you for your note. We are sorry for your loss but are glad you're finding some comfort in the support from Rodney's associates.  Our thoughts are with you.

As an outside observer let me say the article started out tactful, but then, perhaps unwittingly digressed, into something pushing an agenda.  This strikes me as particularly callous considering this irrelevant side-note, taking over half the article, is in response to two trolls on a message board.  Please publish updates regarding tragedies sans the commentary in the future.

This topic is now closed? You post more comments after announcing the topic is now closed? Sounds like the announced "transparency" a couple of years ago, resulting in less transparency, especially when it comes to the 2008 Quixtar volume.
