Social media

Tuesday, February 27, 2007

The launch of the Opportunity Zone is Quixtar's first major foray into social media.  As I've posted elsewhere, we've decided to become part of the conversation about our business rather than simply observe it.

But as anyone who knows consumer generated media knows, this just scratches the surface of social media.

We're now in the middle of conversations about where we go from here....and more importantly, how we use social media to help IBOs build their businesses.

Could you see a Nutrilite organic garden in Second Life?  What about IBO avatars? Should we use YouTube more strategically and share more messages in this medium?  Do you want to hear and see voices from the company through podcasts or vlogs?

I've always been one to focus on the message, but now it's increasingly becoming about the medium.

I posted yesterday posing the question about brand versus product advertising but intentionally left this question for today...in a business built on one-on-one relationships, how does social media come into play in supporting IBOs and helping them build successful businesses?

G'day Beth! (Watch enough 'Take Home Chef' and the aussie talk starts rubbing off!)

I wanted to respond to your questions.  First, I think it is great that you are asking these, it opens an easy avenue for commmunication and keeps things better on topic!

"Nutrilite organic garden in Second Life?" -- Wow, I just checked out that website, I had never heard of it!  But great idea!  I believe any publicity like that is great, and it should be small $$ for lots of eyes, right?

"What about IBO avatars?" -- hum, dunno where you're going with this.  It is humourous that IBOFightBack used Quixtar pins as markers for numbers of posts, but I personally don't see IBO avatar use... Perhaps you can expand on it?

"Should we use YouTube more strategically and share more messages in this medium?"  --- YES!!  YEAH! DEFINITELY! have I already said yes?  I believe this is one of the most under-utilized areas of the internet for corporations.  MySpace, originally for individuals, has soared into the business arena with business, especially movies, having an online "identity".  I hope Quixtar is looking into YouTube has a way to put out those advertising efforts that didn't quit make it to TV or print but still get publicity.  Also, get MySpace! :-)

"Do you want to hear and see voices from the company through podcasts or vlogs?" -- I think the best example of this is XS Energy's "XS in your ear" podcast.  Have you heard them?  GREAT STUFF!!  Although video clips on "This Biz Now" and the available CDs are great, they have to be general in nature.  Podcasts and vlogs allow you to respond quickly to issues straight from the corporation.  I would encourage interviews of employees at Quixtar, as well as IBOs that stop by, and updates on "hot button" issues.

So, take the brand, personify it in the corporations and through all IBOs and let it flow through technology and there's no way you can lose!!

Hope that helps!  Thanks for keeping up with all the posts, responses, and topics!

-Brad

Beth, I would be interested to see what happens with the SecondLife work that you are talking about. If Quixtar/Alticor decides to make the move towards that, please update. If interested I have quite a bit of experience in Secondlife (as well as contacts in several interlinking companies that provide services to bring RL companies into SL). It is an interesting field for marketing and brand development that is just starting to open up. There are a lot of possibilities in that area, also a lot of risk. :-) I am an IBO in WWDB organization downline a few from Terry Felber. You can email my "Second Life" character at zarithi.federko(at)gmail(dot)com if you would be interested in learning more about SL/pursuing it (I'm a "builder" by avatar trade in SL with contacts in other areas).

Congratulations to Quixtar/Alticor for making this step to increase brand exposure in many ways. It is an exciting thing to see and here from an IBO perspective.

Sincerely

James Dasher

G'day back at you, Brad!

A lot of companies and organizations are getting involved with Second Life because there are literally hundreds of thousands of people engaged in that online community.  Companies with brick-and-mortar outlets are creating virtual stores to showcase their offline brands and products and create awareness that may translate to real sales (rather than the lindens traded as currency in Second Life.)  And, we're in the process of setting up a small studio that will allow us to do the kind of "on the fly" podcasts that can help us communicate quickly on all sorts of topics -- and introduce other voices to the Opportunity Zone and elsewhere.

James, it's good to hear from a Second Lifer!  I'll definitely update here and may contact you..I've been in Second Life and after some initial navigation problems (my avatar, unfortunately, had a motor control problem and kept bumping into others.)  We're just getting started in exploring this but are interested in the potential!

I created a SecondLife account last week and wandered around aimlessly in that strange, strange world! One thing I discovered: I barely have enough time to do everything I need to do in my Real Life to spend too much time on a Second Life.

That said, it's very cool to be able to create a virtual society that actually bridges back to real life.  Plus, it should make all the computer gamers truly comfortable as they try to reconnect with the real world (especially if they haven't left the front of their computer screens in some time and need a shower).

Speaking of The Real World, I'm excited about the possibilities for having a "confession booth" from which to create videos for the Web. Not that I'm here to confess anything. Well, I did take one of those little bags of "Famous Amos" cookies from your conference room last week, Beth. In my defense, I was working late that day and, well, my tummy was a little rumbly. Sorry.

I hope you feel better now that you've confessed...but the snacks are there for anyone who needs them and there's no need to do anything but enjoy them!

Beth,

Using YouTube and Secondlife would be fun, but how would that impact my business directly? The only way I can think of is that if I am a part of those sites and can make contacts from those mediums.

I'd like to have this cool stuff on my personal website. Heck, I'd love to have an avatar I can customize, even put in a special personal message like you can do from sitepal.com

It would be totally awesome to be able to further customize the front page of my Quixtar personal sites. I can have an avatar to greet them, select commercials and videos or podcasts of interest to put on that front page.

A nice touch would be to add the feature to "Email this to a friend" on the videos, podcasts, even products. But have it link back to my store. That would  totally ROCK!!!!

While I'm in my dream here, it would be nice to have one more personal website - one that has everything on Quixtar, including partner stores.

Thanks for opening this subject up!!

@Heather G (and general - It makes business sense that with brand recognition and acceptance by a general public that our individual businesses will also continue to grow. Hate or Like marketing, advertising, etc. the fact is that it is here to stay. The forms of advertising will change with time, just as radio ads were the leading form of advertising for a time, then TV, then the internet so it will be the same for forthcoming mediums of advertising/marketing one example of that being YouTube & another example being SecondLife. The market reach of those two sites alone is huge, and if someone has become familiar with the Nutrilite product: it's history, quality, and process through say a SecondLife garden/island that walks them through the Nutrilite vision & process; then when you happen to approach them later on and mention that you are a distributor for Nutrilite brand recognition increases your connection quickly.

That being said I EAGERLY await the time when everything that is on Quixtar.com can be bought directly through my personal web-portal and more features arive to allow us to increase our business.

So while I am fully in agreement with what you are saying one piece to your "dream" is the increase of brand recognition/loyalty via marketing and name. One way in which that will occur is through new mediums of communication like SecondLife & YouTube, even if you don't necessarily use them yourself. That's the power of a business powered by Quixtar...we are backed by a multi-billion dollar corporation who has made the commitment to quality products and increasing the brand loyalty and recognition through many ways. I am so excited to see this process unfold, you started with national ads on TV and you are continuing, thanks!

Building the brand and awareness is the key.  And hearing the thoughts and "dreams" of how this might work will help us create solutions you can use.

Keep 'em coming!

Hey Beth,

Regarding YouTube, check out what "Rich Dad" company is doing with YouTube and some video series.  Seems like you led the way with success stories on "This Biz Now" but their video of a conferece room meeting was quite daring and very insightful!  ( http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=richglobalmedia )

Later!
